XML Sitemap

What is XML Sitemap?

An XML sitemap feeds crawlers a prioritized list of URLs and metadata (lastmod, change frequency). It complements—but does not replace—good internal linking.

Example: After launching 200 new help articles, an updated sitemap helps Google find them faster than waiting for random crawl paths alone.

Why XML Sitemap matters

XML sitemaps matter as a discovery aid for large or new sites; they don’t replace internal linking but help crawlers find important URLs faster after changes.

How XML Sitemap works in digital marketing

Keep sitemaps under size limits, split by section if needed, exclude noindex URLs, and submit in Search Console; monitor indexing vs. submitted counts.
